It’s nice to meet you

Hello. My name is Tanya.profile

I am your instructor here at New You Yoga. I moved to the Lake Macquarie area in 2014 and found myself surrounded not only by a beautiful natural landscape, but also a wonderful community of friendly and active people.

I began hosting neighbourhood yoga sessions on my back deck and quickly realised I experienced a lot of joy in sharing the mental and physical health benefits of yoga with my friends.

After more than 15 years of daily personal practice, I decided to take the next step and complete formal training as a yoga instructor.

My goal as a teacher is not to try and twist and turn you into a pretzel – unless you want me to! Instead, I hope to guide you in your practice so you can find the level of fitness, strength and relaxation that is right for you.

I look forward to you joining me and letting yoga help you find a New You.

Why you need to start meditating right now

Do you find it difficult to relax? Have trouble concentrating? Maybe you are just plain old stressed out?

It takes as little as 10 minutes a day to smash your stress cycle and start living your best life.

You don’t need to spend a fortune. You don’t need a magic pill. You don’t need to win the lotto (although, that would be pretty cool). You don’t even need to radically change your life.

You just need to meditate!

Meditation slows aging

When you’re stressed, every cell in your body feels it. And, they don’t like it! You have these nifty little things in your cells called telomeres. They are little protective caps for your chromosomes. Over time they get shorter and contribute to the aging process. It’s been shown that stress makes this process happen a lot quicker and that meditation can slow it down.

That’s right – you might be able to meditate yourself younger!

Meditation improves your life expectancy

People who meditate are less likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke. They are also less likely to die within five years compared to people who don’t meditate.

Harvard Medical School professor and cardiologist Dr Deepak Bhatt says it decreases stress and anxiety and is recommended alongside diet and exercise to maintain health.

He also says it changes your brain chemistry. It decreases the amount of stress hormones in your body which also results in lower blood pressure and heart rate.

Meditate more – stress less!

Meditation improves mental health

We’ve already covered how meditation can reduce stress. But, it can also reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Meditation practice has shown improvements in disorders including:

Most researchers agree that more study is needed to really understand the benefits of meditation.

But as more is understood about it, the more it is recommended for overall health and wellbeing.

3 reasons you need to do yoga

Yoga has been helping people get fit, healthy and happy for five thousand years.

While some people do yoga for spiritual reasons, most of us do it because it just makes us feel great. It turns out there is some pretty solid science behind why yoga makes us feel good and keeps us in shape – especially as we get older.

Yoga is good for your heart health

Yoga can be as or more effective as running, power walking or cycling for your cardiovascular fitness. So even though the relaxed yoga environment might not make you feel like you are getting a traditional aerobic workout, research tells us otherwise.

Plus, you have to admit stretching on a yoga mat beats pounding it out on a treadmill any day!

Yoga can reduce depression and anxiety

Just one yoga class can change your mood for the better. Research has shown doing yoga can elevate your brain gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) levels – some of the stuff responsible for making you feel happy. People who suffer depression or anxiety often have low GABA levels. Yoga is a natural way to boost this important neurotransmitter.

Yoga can help manage diabetes risk

Regular yoga practice has been linked to healthy BMI, lower blood pressure and reduced belly fat. These are all risk factors for diabetes. So while yoga is not a treatment for diabetes, it can help you keep your health in check and reduce your risk of developing diabetes. If you already have diabetes, yoga can help you manage your symptoms and improve your overall health and quality of life.

So what are you waiting for?

We only just scratched the surface with these three reasons why you need to do yoga. There are literally dozens more and we will cover them in future posts.
